about

Bawku West Collective is a loose-knit group of musicians from the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region of Ghana, West Africa. They play a variety of traditional styles on instruments ranging from a one-string violin known as a gonje or duulung, to a two-string guitar-like instrument called a kologo, to a small wooden flute called a wii. The percussionon this album includes hourglass shaped talking drums as well large and small calabash drums known as binet and binbil respectively. The shakers are called siyaari. They are made from gourds filled with seeds and played by throwing them back and forth from hand to hand..

All proceeds from this album go to the musicians of the collective and their families.
